It is set in the years leading up to the first battles of the U.S. Civil War, mostly in the divided state of Missouri. It follows the fortunes of a young man with Union and abolitionist sympathies, and his involvement with a very Southern family. Some historical characters make cameo appearances, notably William T. Sherman. Winston Churchill (November 10, 1871 – March 12, 1947) was an American novelist. Churchill was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Edward Spalding Churchill and Emma Bell (Blaine) Churchill. He attended Smith Academy in Missouri and the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1894 and became an editor of the Army and Navy Journal. He resigned from the navy to pursue a writing career. While he would be most successful as a novelist, he was also a published poet and essayist.
